01 — The Deal
Latchkey kids with amplifiers
Nobody here is chasing a record deal. That window closed around the time MTV stopped playing videos, and frankly we were busy.
The Brigade is simple: a rotating crew of guys who grew up on the analog side of the line, who still own the guitar, and who would rather spend a Friday in a garage than scrolling a feed. Somebody brings a bottle. Somebody brings the amp that hums. We play until the neighbors get specific about it.
We raised ourselves on cold pizza and a house key on a shoelace. We taped songs off the radio and hit stop before the DJ talked. We are the last people alive who can fix a cassette with a pencil, and the first who had to teach our parents how to use a computer.
So no, we're not going to be quiet. We've been quiet since 1991.
02 — House Rules
Five rules. That's it.
-
Play, drink or shut up
Three options. All of them acceptable. Pick one and commit — the one thing we won't seat is a guy who does none of the above and has notes.
-
The whiskey is shared, the opinions are not
Pour freely. Argue about Van Halen lineups freely. Nobody has to win, and nobody is looking it up on their phone to prove it.
-
No setlist
If it needs a spreadsheet it isn't rock n roll. Someone starts the riff, everyone else catches up or sits out. That's the whole arrangement.
-
Phones stay in the jar
We survived to adulthood with no way of being reached and it was the best time anyone has ever had. One photo at the end. That's the allowance.
-
No participation trophies
You were not special, you are not special, and that is genuinely freeing. Nobody is recording this for content. Nobody is building a brand.
03 — The Pour
Brown, neat, and older than the drummer
The Brigade runs on whiskey. Bourbon mostly, rye when somebody's feeling combative, scotch when somebody's showing off. The rule is quality over proof and generosity over both.
Every gathering somebody brings a bottle nobody's tried. It gets poured, it gets discussed at unreasonable length, and it gets finished. That's the ritual.
What we don't do
- Flavored anything
- Shots — we're not 22 and neither are our livers
- Drink and drive. Ever. Keys in the jar with the phones.
- Judge the guy drinking a beer instead
04 — The Noise
Everything with a real drummer on it
The territory is wide and the standards are low, but there is a territory. If it was loud between roughly 1972 and 1994, it's in bounds.
Three chords is a song. Four is showing off. Nobody in this room needs to hear your tapping.
05 — Enlist
Are you eligible?
There is exactly one hard requirement, and you cannot do anything about it.
Were you born between 1965 and 1976?
Yes — you're Gen X. You're in. Bring a bottle.
No — you're welcome to listen. Respectfully, from over there.
That's the only gate. You don't have to be good. Half of us aren't. You have to show up, plug in, and not be precious about it.
There's no form and no inbox. One button, and that's the entire application.
